The job market is more competitive than ever before. But that doesn’t mean that you should give up. It’s the perfect time to plan your future career goals, and seek out opportunities.

Begin by reviewing your resume and online profile on networking sites you use for professional purposes (like LinkedIn, Monster, and Google Docs) and fun social media sites that you use for your time off from work (like TikTok, Facebook, Twitch, Pinterest, or GoodReads). Be sure to make these profiles private so that only your current contacts and contacts at work are able to see them.

Update your resume by adding any recent relevant professional experiences. Be sure to include any volunteer work you’ve done that is applicable to the industry you’re hoping to enter. Attending professional conferences or meetings can also help you expand your network.

It is important to apply for as many positions as you can. Even if you feel you are over-qualified it’s better to take the interview process seriously than to sit in the shadows, waiting for your next opportunity.

Be sure to practice the best interviewing habits, like maintaining eye contact and smiling. Also, make sure that you have a thorough understanding of the industry that interests you. This will impress interviewers as well as show your enthusiasm for the job. And, of course, always remain professional and respectful when you are in the interview. The old adage «Find the job you love and you’ll never need to work for a single day in your life» is true, but it’s difficult to find the perfect fit.
